Friday Forays in Fiction: Quote

"Creativity isn't far away, or outside of you. It's an inner movement, a heart-shift, a joy making its way out of your throat or hands or feet. So go for it. No one's watching. The payoff is magnificent."

The Greek Mythology Personality Test

I Am
Orpheus

0% Extroversion, 100% Intuition, 100% Emotiveness, 100% Perceptiveness

You are an artist, an aesthete, a sensitive, and someone who has never really let go of that childlike innocence. To you, all of life has a sense of wonder in it, and the story of Orpheus was written about someone just like you.

When the Argo passed the island of the Sirens, Orpheus played a song more beautiful than the Sirens to prevent the crew from becoming enticed. When his wife died, he ventured into the underworld to charm Hades but, in his naivete, he looked back becoming trapped there.

You can capture your unique world view and relate it to others with the skill of a master storyteller. Your sensitivity and creativity make you a treasure to the human race, but your thin-skinned nature and innocence can cause you a lot of disenchantment and pain. What's doubly unfortunate is that, if you try to lose those traits, you never will, and everyone will be able to tell that you're putting up an artificial shell to prevent yourself from being hurt.

Famous people like you: Hemingway, Shakespeare, Mr. Rogers, Melville, Nick Tosches
Stay clear of: Icarus, Hermes, Atlas
OK. I have no idea how much meaning to invest in these things but they are fun and when I ran across this one on a post at Joely's from last summer, I just had to try it.
And I'm pleased to identify with Orpheus. He was always one of my favorite Greek divinities. The archetype of the storyteller essentially.

Take the test here.

And yes, I am still frantically scrolling through Joely's archives in anticipation of their disappearing when she transfers domain to the new host. Any second now. But I'm not nearly as frantic as I was since I am about to catch up to where I first started visiting her Friday Snippets and TT's last summer. I know I haven't read every single post between then and now but I have checked in at least once a week so I fell about caught up.

As weird as this obsession might seem, I am not sorry I spent the bulk of my time over the last 13 days at this for I've learned a lot by watching her path unfold over three years and found a lot of valuable resources which I am anxious to start applying to my own stories.

Most of all I am just so inspired. I am chomping at the bit to get going on my stories again. The most important thing I learned from Joely was the importance of discipline and believing in your dreams no matter what obstacles life throws at you.

What Kind of Flower Are You?

I am a
Nigella

What Flower
Are You?

"Many people think you are just a little bit odd, but you consider yourself just a little eccentric. You find new experiences exciting and fulfilling."

Actually I know i'm more than a little odd. I am also change phobic and except for rare exceptions the only new experiences I find fulfilling are those in books and movies.

I've never heard of a Nigella. It's pretty though. Cuz it's blue!

I've no idea how these quizzes calculate their answers from the questions they ask but I still find them irresistible. I don't always post them though. This time I thought the site was worth looking at. Especially if you are interested in gardening.

Plus I just needed something quick and easy to post tonight. I've gotta get ready for that Read-a-thon.

Let Me Count the Ways...

I'm slowing down.

I once typed 80 words per minute on a manual typewriter. Many many moons ago. LOL. I was timed in a high-school typing class but I'd been typing since I taught myself on my Mom's typewriter at age eleven and then was given a used portable Underwood that was older than me for my 13th birthday. So I'd been typing for years without ever worrying about speed before I took that class.

Around age 30 shortly after getting my first PC, a Tandy 1000EX, I timed myself at just over 100.

Neither rate was anywhere near competitive with those who pushed the boundaries, won type-a-thons etc. But I was content.

I knew I was slowing down. But really!

67 words

Speedtest

Maybe my typing teacher was right to harp on posture--I'm sitting bed with the laptop balanced on a box between my legs and Ed's back is pressed against my right elbow. Hmmm. Maybe it isn't as bad as this seems.

Plus I have been typing a lot today and am fairly fatigued.

Actually I had to make four tries before I got over 60 words. I decided to go with it for this post because it was the only one in which I got zero errors. So at least I had accuracy going for me. In one of my tries I managed nearly double the number of keystrokes but typoed 16 times and thus got a 37 word score.

I noticed too that it is difficult for me to type words in a list and out of context. I'm sure I'm faster when typing paragraphs.

I think I'm going to try this again when conditions are more favorable.

H/T Joely Sue Burkhart

Update: I went back and practiced at the site this morning--Wednesday. After several warm up tries I began getting scores in the sixties with either 1 or zero wrong words. Then I got this one over 70 with zero errors and thought I'd just update this:

73 words

Speedtest

If I ever work it up into the eighties with zero errors I think I will just post again to celebrate.

It is accuracy that I need to work on!

The two most common mistakes are transposing left-hand and right-hand keystrokes and not hitting the space bar hard enough to take.

While preparing my TT below, I had to Google the Bible verse, My sheep hear my voice, to be sure I quoted it exact. This landed me on a page from Claire Joy's blog Flavor of the Month where I encountered this photo in her most recent post. I experienced a frission--goosebumps and a kind of dilation of the inner eye--at how many images in this photo related to the images invoked by the memories from items one and two in my TT list. I lusted for that photo to accompany my post. But the only way to get the right to it was to take the quiz and hope I got the same result. And I did. Else I would have waited until tomorrow to post the result.
