Vintage Buttons from my Mom's collection
ranging from pre WWI thru 1970s

I'm going to be playing in my fiber arts supplies this week--thread, ribbons, yarn, buttons--with two main projects in mind: accessorizing crocheted and embroidered bookmarks and a sweater.  Also will be planning Xmas gifts and birthday gifts coming up over the next six months or so.

I have been severely limiting my crocheting and other sewing for over a month now.  At first it was because I'd strained my shoulder and couldn't control tension on the thread. But then as the balance of my attention shifted back towards reading, writing and blogging from the obsession with crochet I'd held for nearly two years, I realized that I did not want to allow it to shift back into obsession--in either direction.

I love reading and writing as much as crochet and needlework so was missing it terribly but struggling with my tendency to get so locked in on what I'm doing that I lose all track of the passage of time.  Sometimes for days at a time.

This past week I was nearly that focused on blogging for Banned Book Week but the fact that my attention was split between writing and prepping posts, reading, surfing other blogs, and social networking saved me from hyperfocusing on any one of them.  But I did drop the thread, so to speak, and my fingers are itching for it.

So stay tuned, I'll probably have photos of fiber art WIP over the next weeks.

I'm also going to be prepping for NaNoWriMo but most of that is mental work--daydreaming--which I can do while playing with my thread WIP.

Oh Button It

My first picture upload at cheezeburger.com. These are two of the buttons I found in my Mom's button collection. I found the yellow one three weeks ago when doing the big once over sort and purge of the collection before I schlepped it back to Mom's. I found the black one yesterday as I did the second and third over sort by color, size and composition.

Except for this one box in which I collected every button from the size of a nickle on down that interested me or which I could instantly see it's use on a bookmark. I mixed color and composition because I love the sensation of running my fingers through them letting my imagination run with ideas as the buttons run through my fingers.

Less than half of that special collection appears in this pic as I'd split it between the top and bottom of the box and today I added couple more fistfuls.

Crochet Bridal Purse Done (Almost)

Am all but done with the crocheted bridal purse I started last Monday. Have it off the hook but still need to tuck tails (10) and sew the beautiful antique buttons from the button collection that was begun by my great-grandma, added to by my grandma and my Mom.

I mustn't linger as it is already after 5am Tuesday (I was determined to finish this and get the pictures for this post) so I'll leave you with two close ups:


Close up of the top 2/3 showing the chain mesh body, the cross stitch in variegated blue dividing the top and bottom halves, the triple crochet row for threading the drawstring through and the double crochet shell stitch rim. The bottom is sewn together with single crochet shells.
