It's Monday What Are You Reading?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
Share what you (are, have been, are about to, hope to be) reading or reviewing this week. Sign Mr Linky at Book Journey and visit other Monday reading roundups.

Last week I participated in Bookjourney's Read-a-Long for The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.  My post containing my initial musings and some of the comments I posted elsewhere and later pasted into updates is here.

That was the day I also started reading the book aloud to my Mom and we kept it up for four evenings running in the hour or so between dinner and her bedtime.  We didn't get to tonight as I was so late getting dinner ready Mom was too tired to stay up for it by the time she'd eaten.

Oh my did I have an adventure in the kitchen this evening.  It was an adventure to top all the others I've had in the last five days that I've been in charge of two meals a day.  Just to touch the highlights let me drop in here the little status updates I shared on fb:

Lesson #150855 Best not to pet the cat with your face.
Lesson #150899 when slicing carrots and the carrot get stuck on the blade best not to press the carrot against the blade with your thumb
Lesson # 150933 when cutting open a bag of broccoli flowers best to check first if the other end is already open
Lesson # 150944 best not to assume the 1 is followed by a C especially on a package of Italian pasta. A Cup and a liter are two different animals
Lesson # 150955 best not to use a towel to hold the hot handles of a pan of boiling pasta already starting to stick to pour it into the bigger pan of boiling water as what you get is a hammock that catches the pasta, swings over the rim of the pot and dumps it on the other hot burner, the stove top and the floor

Then there was the scare Mom gave me Saturday evening when she almost fainted.  I am so glad my sister is due to drive in the driveway nearly any minute. And if it is even possible, my esteem for her has risen even higher than it was.  I don't know how she does it--the 24/7 care of our elderly, nearly blind, Mom who also has a herniated disc and carries the aftereffects of a mild stroke and broken hip.  That and raising her teen-age son and working as respite provider for disturbed children.

It was for the latter that she has been gone five days for training.

I've been at Mom's this time a month and expect at least another week.  I was home for one month and a week between this visit and my January-March stay here.  Unlike in March when I was able to read 8 whole novels while here I have not been able to read very much this time.  That is partly due to more responsibilities this time but also somewhat to the several crochet gifts I had going for friends and family in the area and the fact that I've started making time for writing again having joined ROW80 and the June Camp NaNoWriMo.

But I am making time to read the blog tour book that I'm slated to do a review and giveaway for on Thursday: Spartacus by Ben Kane.

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Category: Historical Fiction

Available in Print and eBook, 480 pages

From the publisher:

Long the stuff of legends, Spartacus is known to most modern readers through the classic Kubrick film version of Howard Fast’s novel. Now bestselling historical novelist Ben Kane returns to the source material and presents a lively and compelling new vision of the man who was Spartacus—Roman army auxiliary, slave, gladiator and ultimately the leader of an army of slaves who nearly brought Rome to its knees.

I'm about halfway and it is a chunkster so I better get busy..

Then I have another chunkster to read for a blog tour for which I'm posting a review on the 12th:

The Concubine Saga by Lloyd Lofthouse
Publisher: Three Clover Press
Category: Historical Fiction
Available in Print and Kindle, 621 Pages

From the publisher:

No Westerner has ever achieved Robert Hart’s status and level of power in China. Driven by a passion for his adopted country, Hart became the “godfather of China’s modernism”, inspector general of China’s Customs Service, and the builder of China’s railroads, postal and telegraph systems and schools.
However, his first real love is Ayaou, a young concubine. Sterling Seagrave, in Dragon Lady, calls her Hart’s sleep-in dictionary and says she was wise beyond her years.
