Thursday Thirteen #42

Since yesterday's post was all about the influence of the Twin Peaks soundtrack on my Fruits of the Spirit storyworld, I decided to list some of the other music that I've used to set mood for a scene, a story, even a character.

I am partial to movie sound tracks, which isn't too surprising when you consider that they were scored to impart or emphasize the moods of scenes. The instrumental only tracks are the most useful as having someone else's words sung to me while I'm trying to compose my own can be distracting. But vocals sung in a language I don't know act the same as an instrument.

The entire range of emotions can be expressed with symphonic orchestral music as well as electronically synthesized music and when the two are combined as in Maurice Jarre, really interesting things happen on the emotional level. Jazz and Blues are well known as languages of emotion.

Thirteen Musicians I Whose Music I Compose My Stories To:

  1. Angelino Badalamenti (of Twin Peaks fame)
  2. Enya
  3. Beethoven
  4. Motzart
  5. Holst (esp. The Planets)
  6. John Williams (how many movie scores?)
  7. Bach
  8. Vivaldi
  9. Emerald Web
  10. Wagner
  11. Maurice Jarre (esp. Ghost soundtrack)
  12. Sacred Spirits (American Indian Chant with drums and pipe)
  13. Tchaikovsky

Excellent list of music! I like to listen to classical music when I'm writing too. And I love so many of these composers works, including Tchaikovsky, Bach (listening to the Unaccompanied Cello Suites right now), Vivaldi, and one of my particular favorites is Holst's "The Planets".

Happy TT! :-)

I need silence for writing, music destracts me, but I like Maurice Jarre and the American Indian song. I don't like classical music, gets on my nerves !

I love Enya. Have you listened to Loreena McKennitt. I listen to her lastest cd, Ancient Muse, a lot while I'm writing.

Joely Sue Burkhart 7/19/2007 5:15 AM

I love writing to music too. Happy TT!

I'm on a piano kick at the moment. I'm currently od'ing on Van Cliburn, but I think I'm going to have to add in some Ashkenazi (both are pianists), and add some Rachmaninoff to the list. Happy TT.

Hi Joy - thanks for visiting my TT.
I mostly write in silence, but when I'm doing a really emotional scene, my fave background music is Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, a collection of other Baroque pieces.

Anything with lyrics is an absolute no-no!

Great list. Some of my favorite are here too.

Inspiring music indeed! Good to see the classics among the rest. In the car this morning I was listening to Bach's coffee cantates. Love them!
Thanks for visiting my full moon TT.

Happy TT, Joy!!

Enya and Vivaldi, ditto.

I really love, love listening to music to get inspired. =)

What a beautiful list.

the way music works for me is a kind of pre-muse ritual. I basically will have a lot of agitation building up when I am writing or wrestling with ideas...it sort of goes that I land up digging out music that is good story driven songs and dancing...this happened last weekend...it was boiling hoot yet I was listening to all these songs that I sing along to kind of thing...and

this week I am changing a few things about my habits. I am actually making myself sit down...away from computer and write. I am working ona script...and I don't compose on a computer...but rather, get this...usually in my bed! I must look like an idiot...but I like the quiet and the snug feeling and I usually will just start to get ideas and I act out characters...literally speaking as if I am one of them. Weird I know. No music while I do this though because I usually have a soundtrack in my head while going too...

Isn't it amazing all our different means to be inspired...and the most amazing part is that so many people have these talents and passions. It makes me very ahppy to hear about.

Have an awesome weekend Joy! I "met" Ed...is that your significant other? I went to his TT list today as well.

Have fun guys!

enya just has to be great to listen to and get inspiration.

VERY inspiring list. Have you ever heard some of the late Michael Kamen's works? He did a lot of movie scores and a lot of them are out on album. Brilliant stuff.

Check him out and let me know what you think! I find his music to really get the creativity flowing.

Bri 7/19/2007 11:52 AM

I agree with the John Williams (especially the Revenge of the Sith Score - even though the movie was...meh). Enya and Tchaikovsky as well. :D

Julie Tamor, the director of "Across the Universe," directed the broadway production of The Lion King musical. So..yah. :)

Anna J. Evans 7/19/2007 1:13 PM

Love your list, but I'm also one who needs total quiet to work. (like THAT's easy to come by in my crazy house, lol.)
